Jewell Will Field Strongest Side Against Bristol Rovers Tue 14th Aug 2012 11:30
Town boss Paul Jewell says he will field his strongest possible team in tonight’s season-opening Capital One Cup first round tie against Bristol Rovers at Portman Road (KO 7.45pm). The Blues manager’s options are somewhat limited by international calls and a couple of injuries, while he admits his squad is three players short.

Town fell to their second pre-season defeat in two games as early goals saw Southend to a 2-1 victory at Roots Hall. Kane Ferdinand had already spurned one opportunity when he opened the scoring in the sixth minute, the Republic of Ireland U19 international heading in the second off Luke Chambers’s knee five minutes later. The Blues’ reply was a Bryan Gunn-esque own goal from Mark Phillips after the break.

The funeral of long-time TWTD board regular and lifelong Town fan Nick Brown, who posted under the name of TheDalaiFarmer and died last weekend at the age of 46, will take place at the Seven Hills Crematorium on Felixstowe Road on Thursday 19th July at 1.30pm, followed by a wake at Gresham’s Sports Club in Tuddenham Road. A collection is being taken to buy a brick or bricks in Nick’s memory on the Ipswich Town Wall.

Town travelled to Doncaster this afternoon for their final game of the season without former skipper Grant Leadbitter, who has decided not to remain at Portman Road after his contract is up at the end of the season. The Blues were already short of midfielders for their lunchtime clash with relegated Rovers (KO 12.30pm) with Luke Hyam injured, Lee Bowyer released and Lee Martin and Ryan Stevenson both having missed training due to injuries this week. Youngsters Byron Lawrence and Joe Whight have both made the trip.

The Blues manager has said his squad will be much the same as the one which drew 1-1 at Crystal Palace on Saturday with younger players more likely to get their chance in the games against Millwall and Doncaster.

Town legend Ray Crawford admitted that he had a tear in his eye when the current Blues side came over to applaud him and his fellow 1961/62 First Division champions moments before the start of Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Barnsley. Crawford, Andy Nelson, Larry Carberry, John Compton, Doug Moran and Ted Phillips were in the directors’ box having renamed the South Stand the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand in honour of their mentor.
